How loading crews work in Chicago

You pick up your U-Haul, Penske, or Budget truck. We send a two- or three-person crew to your origin — Logan Square three-flat, Bucktown condo, Pilsen walk-up, wherever. They load under your direction. Most Chicago jobs run two to four hours depending on building access and how many floors are involved. Stairs add time, and Chicago has a lot of stairs.

We don’t drive the truck, we don’t broker storage. Labor — and the packing experience that comes with it — is the whole job.

When to use a crew vs. moving yourself

A few rules of thumb from Chicago moves we run every week:

• Third-floor walk-up. This is the city’s most common housing stock and the single biggest predictor of a back injury when amateurs try to DIY. Three movers handle a three-flat in two to three hours; two movers will take five and somebody will tap out.
• May 1 / October 1 lease turnover. Both dates are city-wide moving day — trucks book up, parking is hot, freight elevators are double- booked. Get a crew on the calendar at least a week ahead for these.
• Building-permit-required loads. Most West Loop and Streeterville high-rises require a moving permit and elevator reservation. The crew handles their side; you handle the permit (the building’s management office can walk you through it).
• Winter moves. November–March, salt and snow on shoes turn hardwood floors into a liability fast. The crew brings drop-cloths and floor runners; DIY usually doesn’t, and the security deposit math goes poorly.

If you’re moving a studio out of Lakeview with a friend’s pickup and an elevator, DIY is reasonable.

Frequently asked questions

My building requires a Certificate of Insurance — is that included?

If your building requires a Certificate of Insurance, mention it at booking and the crew lead will work with you to file ahead of move day.

What about loading docks?

Most large North Side and Loop buildings have a service entrance with a loading dock; some have a freight elevator only accessible from inside. The crew will work out the right approach with your building’s manager on arrival — but you should tell us at booking whether the dock has specific hours (often 8am–5pm weekdays, not weekends).

How does May 1 / October 1 work?

Those are Chicago’s traditional moving days and the city books out fast. For May 1, our crews start filling calendars in early April; October 1 fills in early September. Wednesday or Thursday of those weeks are usually the easiest non-day-of slots if your lease has any flexibility.

Will a crew load in alley access only?

Yes — common for two-flats and three-flats in Pilsen, Logan Square, Avondale. The crew works the alley side and uses the building’s rear stairs. Tell us the truck size at booking so the crew brings the right dolly for narrow staircases.

Cold-weather moves — anything different?

The crew brings floor runners and asks you to clear a path before arrival. We load weather-sensitive items (electronics, art, wood furniture) last so they spend the least time in cold transit. If sub-freezing on pickup day, allow extra time for stiff hands and slower stair work.

Same-day booking — is that possible?

On weekdays it usually is; on Saturday between April and October it’s genuinely tight. Book at least 24 hours ahead when you can.
