How loading crews work in Philadelphia
You rent a U-Haul, Penske, or Budget truck. We send a two- or three-person crew to your origin — Fishtown trinity, South Philly rowhouse, Center City high-rise, Manayunk walk-up, Mt Airy twin, wherever. They load under your direction. Most Philly jobs run two to four hours; the city’s abundant-stairs-and-narrow-doors housing stock pushes loading times longer than the suburban average.
We don’t drive the truck and we don’t broker storage. Labor — done by people who know which Philadelphia streets a 20-foot truck can actually turn onto — is the whole product.
When to use a crew vs. moving yourself
Philadelphia patterns where a crew earns its keep:
- Rowhouse stairs. South Philly, Point Breeze, Graduate Hospital, Fishtown. Stairs are narrow, treads are short, and turning a couch on a landing requires the right approach angle. Two amateurs is the most predictable injury pattern we see in this market.
- September 1. University-driven move-in plus the city’s tradition of summer-end leases stack on a single weekend. Trucks book out two weeks ahead; permits for parking are scarce.
- Center City + University City high-rises. Most require a Certificate of Insurance and freight-elevator reservation. Crews that have run those buildings before move at scheduled speed.
- Street-parking permit moves. PPA Temporary No Parking Zones cost about $50 plus signage and need to be applied for at least three business days ahead. The crew can advise; you pull the permit.
If it’s a Fishtown studio moving to another Fishtown studio with a friend’s pickup, DIY is fine.
What it costs
Loading Crews quotes every job individually. We don’t publish flat rates — the right number for your move depends on crew size, hours, stairs, specialty items, and the day of week.
After you submit the booking form, our dispatch team texts or calls within five minutes with your specific quote. Flat-rate quotes, no upcharges on arrival, no charge from us if no crew claims your job. The quote you get is the price you pay.

Frequently asked questions
What about the PPA / parking permit?
For street loads in residential Philly, the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s Temporary No Parking permit reserves curb space for the truck. It costs around $50 plus a per-foot signage fee and you apply through PPA at least three business days ahead. The crew can advise on how much space you’ll need.
Service area beyond Philly proper?
Most of the metro: Philadelphia, Cherry Hill, Camden, Conshohocken, Manayunk, Mt Airy, Chestnut Hill, Bala Cynwyd, Wayne, Ardmore, Bensalem, Levittown, Norristown, King of Prussia, West Chester, Media. Further out (Pottstown, Doylestown) are covered by our national dispatch.
COI for downtown high-rises?
If your building requires a Certificate of Insurance, mention it at booking and the crew lead will work with you to file ahead of move day.
What if my street is too narrow for a 26-ft truck?
Tell us at booking, especially for blocks in South Philly, Queen Village, and Bella Vista. The crew can sometimes shuttle from a wider nearby street using a smaller vehicle; other times we’ll suggest a 15-foot truck and a second trip. Drone Street View doesn’t always catch curb work or construction.
Heat and humidity — August moves?
Start before 9am. The crew brings water; you keep your own cooler stocked. Heat-sensitive items (electronics, candles, wood furniture) load last so they’re in the truck for the shortest possible duration.
Same-day booking?
Weekdays usually yes. End-of-month and September 1 windows fill three to five days out — book ahead.
